At Coldfair Green Primary we recognise the importance of Science in everyday life and aim to give it the prominence that it deserves.
Intent Statement
Develop scientific knowledge and understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Develop a strong understanding of Science through different types of enquiry that helps them answer questions about the world around them.
Be equipped with the knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of Science.
Develop essential enquiry skills to deepen their scientific knowledge.
Use a range of methods to communicate information and present findings in a scientific and systematic way such as diagrams, bars and charts and using ICT where possible.
Develop a respect for materials and equipment they use with due regard to their own and others safety.
Develop an enjoyment and enthusiasm for Scientific learning and discovery and be naturally curious about the world.
Implementation Statement
We aim to:
Create a positive attitude to science learning within the classroom.
Re-enforce high expectations of high achievements in science.
Encourage the children to ask questions.
Provide opportunities for the children to use their skills to discover answers.
Create engaging lessons with appropriate and high-quality resources to aid understanding.
Build upon the learning and skills of previous years such as • Proficiency of selecting equipment • Collating and interpreting results • Increased confidence in their ability to draw conclusions • Sophistication of scientific vocabulary chosen • Increased independence at planning and carrying out investigations.
Provide opportunities to develop an understanding of their surroundings by accessing outdoor learning wherever possible.
Provide exciting and relevant enrichment opportunities for trips and inviting visitors in to school which will extend learning beyond the classroom.
Hold regular events such as Science Week to provide a broader acquisition of knowledge and skills.
Regularly monitoring (both formally and informally) to identify any children with gaps in their knowledge and learning through high quality questioning and live marking.
Carry out ongoing assessments of Scientific skills and knowledge against yearly ‘progression of skills’ statements.
Impact Statement.
Children will know more, remember more and understand more about the Scientific world. They will make connections with what has previously been learned and what is currently being taught.
Provide children with the Scientific foundation and knowledge to understand the world
Children will learn that they can be Scientists and capable of achieving.
Children will enjoy science which will result in motivated learners with sound scientific knowledge.
